Inflammation is a natural process in the human body. Usually, inflammation automatically gets a bad rap, but it exists as a natural protective response to bodily harm. 

WebMD offers this definition: “When inflammation happens, chemicals from your body’s white blood cells enter your blood or tissues to protect your body from invaders. This raises the blood flow to the area of injury or infection. It can cause redness and warmth. Some of the chemicals cause fluid to leak into your tissues, resulting in swelling.”

Two Types of Inflammation

Now, there are two different types of inflammation: acute and chronic

Acute inflammation happens after injury, infection, or illness. 

Whereas chronic inflammation describes the prolonged inflammatory response in the body. 

Inflammation & Oxidative Stress

Inflammation gets its bad rap from chronic inflammation because it can significantly damage tissues and organs, which then increases the production of free radicals, resulting in oxidative stress. 

In short, oxidative stress is involved in many diseases and conditions: autoimmune disorders, asthma, cancer, diabetes, just to name a few. 

We know these issues plague our world, so how could CBD help reduce chronic inflammation and restore balance? 

Research on CBD & Inflammation

We’ll focus our efforts on two studies, but please continue to dig deep into the numerous other studies published on CBD and inflammation! 

This 2016 study published in Clinical Hemorheology and Microcirculation sought to learn how CBD could treat pancreatic inflammation in diabetic mice. The mice treated with CBD developed diabetes later than the mice who didn’t receive treatment. 

Another study in 2017 investigated how CBD affected rats with osteoarthritis. After a short time, acute joint inflammation was reduced by the administration of local CBD treatment. What’s more, the CBD was also discovered to prevent the development of further nerve damage and joint pain! 

Conclusion on Inflammation & CBD

As you can see, CBD holds much promise in treating both acute and chronic inflammation. However, it’s imperative that further research is conducted in order to determine just exactly how it works and the best applications for different types of inflammation.
